triathlete dating fail

Trying to date while being an active triathlete is hard.

If you manage to land a date with a "regular" (AKA - non-athlete) person (why would you want to do this anyways?!), prepared to be blown off due to having an "extreme" lifestyle. Your personality might be great, but you are crazy for riding your bike for 3 hours, because who would ever want to do that?! Isn't it cooler to eat nachos while sitting on the couch?

If you try to date someone who is a single sport person (runner, or swimmer, or cyclist) it will work out for a while, but then you will convince them to try a triathlon because you are super awesome, and then you will beat them (since you are seasoned), and if you are a woman.. well they won't like that!

If you actually manage to meet another triathlete (bonus if they are rich) - great! But if you're both Ironman triathletes.. prepare to never see each other because you are both on your respective 6 hour rides that are probably conflicting since you can't ride together due to gender/speed discrepancies.

This is why I have a cat. :)

  1. If you are lucky enough to marry your sporty 2nd half you will be tortured by guilt when they spend 6 months rehabbing an ITB injury and glare at you every time you return from a run...

    1. This. I think Greg snuck in his runs over the last 2 months because he was afraid of the death stare.....also true when Ironman tapering and your multi sport other half is NOT tapering.

  2. But if you date/marry the aspiring businessman (that wants to be the millionaire) that spends all his time at work 7 days a week.... BINGO!!

  3. I agree with you on points #1 & #2, but #3, I disagree. One of you just needs to sandbag it! Easy!

  4. haha... nice post and so true! the ~5-6 guys I've dated since taking up triathlon in 2007 have been either runner, cyclist or triathlete. obviously, none have worked out. my non-tri friends are convinced that I need to date outside the endurance sport circle, but that brings us back to your point about eating nachos and sitting on the couch and not understanding why I want to ride my bike 60 miles on a saturday morning. *sigh*

    1. yeah my friends said that too.. and then they set me up with a friend of theirs who is not an athlete but has a PhD. and he said that my lifestyle was too extreme for him (to them, not me). so that basically ended that idea!

  5. I'm a single male triathlete and your idea that a man would never want a woman to beat him in the sport is not going to be true for all men. Stop stereotyping, please. Since I have not done an IM yet (my goal is a half-ironman two summers from now!) you would beat me by a large amount. But see, I do it for fun. I just did a olympic tri and was beat by A LOT of women and men, even by people in their 50s. You need to find a guy who is more secure in himself that he doesn't have to beat other people's times. We exist. But yeah, we're probably training and don't have time to date.

Also, you are way over-thinking about whether your dating partner would be faster or slower than you, or have a different schedule or different interests. Of course he'll be different! Stop concentrating on the potential differences and think about what you'd share with him. Sharing a love of the sport (or any physical activity) is enough. You don't have to be equal in your abilities. That's how a marraige or partnership of any kind is supposed to work--the two of you compliment one another so that the sum is greater than the parts. Am I naive? Perhaps. But why not?

    2. Yep, I guess I did. I thought you were being serious. The internet is funny that way.

    3. I mean I'm not going to lie.. I was pulling from real life experiences.. but it was very not serious. if you ever have to ask yourself, "is Alexa being serious?" the answer is going to be NO 99% of the time!
